DIALOGUE: Mind Map

Plantlance Seongsu Flagship, Seoul, Korea

25.08.-09.09.2023

Dialogue: Mind Map operates on the premise that if analyses and estimates of the art market are expressed through graphs and charts, which are linear tools, then interpretation and exploration of artists and their art worlds require other visual means. Based on numbers and data, market dynamics are delineated using graphs and charts. These tools lay out the data in a structured and systematic manner, revealing linear relationships such as trends, shifts, and anomalies among varied variables. As such, what are the visual tools available for interpreting the artist's artistic world and philosophy?

This exhibition employs the "Mind Map" for this visual portrayal. Mind maps exhibit non-linear characteristics with no limitations as to directionality and causality, and they contain iconographic features that organically link various concepts or ideas in a segmented manner. Furthermore, a mind map may consist of a series of outliers combined into one conceptual structure. The segmented elements may not be related causally, but a hidden link or relationship may be revealed upon closer inspection.

Dialogue: Mind Map was held in Seongsu-dong, a district popular among young audiences, attracting greater engagement with contemporary art. The exhibition repurposed Plantrans, a former furniture showroom, transforming it into a space that aligned with the exhibition’s context.

Additionally, the Dive into Korean Art program brought in international curators, expanding global art networks. Some curators conducted interviews with participating artists, later developing essays based on these discussions. They were also invited to a networking party, where they had the opportunity to engage in deeper conversations with the artists in a more relaxed setting.

Dialogue: Mind Map did not simply showcase finished artworks but visualized the creative process and artists' worldviews through mind maps, allowing visitors to engage with the development behind each piece.

Artists structured their evolving ideas, sources of inspiration, and artistic inquiries into mind maps, integrating them as key elements within the exhibition space.
